Rather than creating a single large building, the home is organized as a collection of simple gabled volumes connected by a glazed spine, echoing the historic arrangement of barns, sheds, and farm buildings found throughout the countryside.
The design carefully balances openness with privacy. Living spaces extend toward expansive views across the fields, while sheltered courtyards and stone garden walls create intimate outdoor rooms protected from the surrounding landscape. A covered terrace becomes the heart of the home, blurring the boundary between inside and out and creating a place to gather throughout the seasons.
Materiality was driven by a desire for permanence and authenticity. Vertical wood cladding, light masonry, black steel, and standing-seam metal roofs reference traditional agricultural buildings while being detailed with a refined contemporary language. The restrained palette allows the home to sit quietly within the landscape, changing with the light and seasons rather than demanding attention.
The home’s organization separates public and private functions into distinct volumes linked by a transparent circulation gallery. This linear connector creates a sequence of framed views through the property while allowing each building to maintain its own identity. The detached garage reinforces the composition, completing a modern interpretation of a working farmstead.
Landscape and residence were designed together. Native grasses, perennial plantings, and simple hardscape elements extend the natural character of the site, while the pool terrace and outdoor living spaces are carefully enclosed to provide comfort without disconnecting from the surrounding fields.
Designed for the owners of Dean’s Hill Farm, the residence reflects a shared appreciation for craftsmanship, simplicity, and the enduring beauty of rural design. The result is a home that is unmistakably contemporary while remaining deeply connected to its agricultural setting and the legacy of the land.
