Designers in a World of Archi*%#ts

Do you need an archi*%#t to design your home in Ontario? The short answer is no. At SMPL Design Studio we’re designers, and proudly so, working in an industry where the archi*%#t title tends to get most of the attention.

What we do

We specialize in single-family residential projects: renovations and additions, new custom homes, cottages, and the occasional beautiful cabin in the woods. We’ve been doing this work for seventeen years across the country, and for fifteen of those years here in Ontario.

Every set of plans that leaves our studio is BCIN stamped. We’re fully insured as an organization, and we stand behind our clients, our builders, our suppliers and the trades on site. Since the day we started, our work has been defined as much by the support we give each project as by the drawings themselves.

A fixed fee, from day one to the finish line

We work on a fixed fee. Whether it’s the archi*%#tural design of your new custom home or its interior design, we set out the fee structure at the very start. Then we carry the project through to completion, with the goal of leaving both you and your builder satisfied.

Support that continues into construction

Design is only half the job. Construction is where questions come up, and we’re there for it. We drew the plans, so we’re the liable party and the ones with the answers. We’re glad to support the process well beyond delivering a beautiful design.

Our work

Our portfolio speaks for itself. Over the years we’ve completed expansive, elaborate projects alongside clean and simple ones. Modern contemporary design is our passion, and it has become our forte; to a degree, it’s what we’re known for. That puts us in competition with some of the best archi*%#ts in Toronto and across the country, and we welcome the comparison. Spend some time with our work on Instagram, YouTube and looking at the projects on our website.

Do your research

Whether you hire a designer or an archi*%#t, do your homework before you commit:

  • Read the Google reviews.
  • Ask for client feedback, and talk to previous clients.
  • Ask builders what it was like to work with the team.
  • Most important: ask what support the team provides once the design is done.

If you want to hire a designer instead of an archi*%#t in this province, it is absolutely acceptable. We manage the entire permit process from start to finish.

Let’s talk

Have questions about your next project? Send us a DM or give us a call. We’d be happy to connect.

*A note obfuscation

You may have noticed we don’t spell out a certain word in this post. While the colloquial use of the word is casually used by every one in day-to-day conversation; we are held to a stricter, more precise and limited use in official forums. Forgive us if it seems pedantic, but in Ontario, “archi*%#t” is a protected title under the provincial Architects Act: only licensed practitioners registered through the Ontario Association of Architects may use it, or its variations, to describe themselves or their services. We’re licensed designers, not archi*%#ts, so we’re careful about how that word shows up on our pages. The asterisks are our small, tongue-in-cheek way of acknowledging the rule and distinction.
