Egremont Drive Residence

Set within a conservation-regulated parcel of land along a river near London, Ontario, this 2,950-square-foot residence represents a rare opportunity to build in a sensitive natural environment. Elevated on a custom steel superstructure, the home appears to float above its landscape—a modern interpretation of living lightly on the land.

The design challenge was to create a warm, enduring family home on a site where conventional foundations were impossible. The solution was a precision-engineered system of drilled steel piles, supporting a full structural frame that keeps the house above the 100-year floodplain while minimizing disturbance to the ground below. This elevated approach not only protects the dwelling from potential flooding but allows water and wildlife to move naturally beneath it, maintaining the integrity of the conservation area.

Wrapped entirely in natural wood siding with silver aluminum-framed windows, the residence blends restraint and texture. Over time, the wood will weather to a soft grey, further merging the home with its surroundings. The palette is intentionally limited—light, honest materials that reflect the simplicity and quietness of the setting.

Inside, open-plan living spaces emphasize connection—to both the outdoors and between family members. Full-height glazing brings the forest into daily view, while a central gathering area bridges private and social spaces. The interiors are bright, natural, and tactile, defined by wood floors, light finishes, and framed views of the treetops.

The Egremont Drive Residence is a study in balance—between engineering precision and natural calm, between grounded permanence and delicate lightness. As a piece of residential design, it demonstrates how thoughtful structure and material restraint can transform site limitations into defining features, resulting in a home that stands both above and within its landscape.
